My college buddy, brilliant conservative, former chief deputy Attorney Generalof VA, and adviser to numerous candidates and office holders, Bernie McNamee, offers his analysis in the Richmond Times Dispatch on why the Republican message isn't getting through: they are missing the point. The Republican Party stands for smaller government and more personal freedom--NOT just lower taxes. Keeping taxes low so Americans can choose how to spend their own money rather than forfeiting it to the government is an important component of the argument, but not the bottom line. If the American people are going to buy a conservative message, it has to be compelling, and based on something more than a couple extra bucks in your pocket.
